We have a lot to give thanks for this Thanksgiving. Personally, each of us has only to look down at the ground, where our feet never fail to find a bedrock-like place from which we launch our little lives into a great big world. And as a group, we at Wellville have thanks to give to the wonderful folks we trod the way with – in Clapsop and Lake Counties, and Spartanburg and Muskegon and North Hartford. You are intrepid and creative, and we learn from every one of your many successes – great and small – and your fertile failures. So raise a glass this Thanksgiving to your efforts. And love those near you and those afar.
Last Monday the Spartanburg City Council approved unanimously a “Healing, Reconciling and Unity” resolution, acknowledging “the historical antecedents of systemic racism” and apologizing to residents for “racial injustices and long-lasting inequities that have resulted from those policies.” The unprecedented resolution also enumerates specific actions Council members will take, including to “promote racial equity through all policies approved by City Council” and “support community efforts to amplify concerns about racist policies and practices.”
